We have both friends who are uncompromising in their commitment to shared Christian faith and also (sometimes not the same) those who are clearly affirmative of gay, lesbian and transgender brothers and sisters. NCYM(C) seems to have room for both and also non theist Friends. We find we can all be together in love.
Karen StewartAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37106751.post-82233955183801468022012-01-02T09:40:33.962-05:002012-01-02T09:40:33.962-05:00I'm guessing you're already familiar with ...I'm guessing you're already familiar with Peggy Parsons and Freedom Friends Church in Salem, OR. As far as New City Friends goes, a clearness committee of Detroit Friends Meeting (Lake Erie YM)established to deal with the leading to start the group felt that it couldn't recommend taking the new group under the meeting's care- the idea of more clearly defined Christian foundation was/is outside the norms of that meeting.
I know that there are other (local, not sure about Yearly Mtgs per se) bodies of Friends who are both corporately Christian and affirm LGBT people, but none are particularly accessible to us here in Detroit.

Tyler HamptonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37106751.post-51035042023108143642012-01-01T10:39:18.976-05:002012-01-01T10:39:18.976-05:00Micah, you write, “Both New City Friends and Capit...Micah, you write, “Both New City Friends and Capitol Hill Friends were turned away by pre-existing Friends bodies. Some Friends are uncomfortable with our uncompromising commitment to shared Christian faith. Others are put off by our clear affirmation of our gay, lesbian and transgender brothers and sisters. Despite our best attempts, there seems to be no existing body that has room for all of who we are.”

This surprises me. My own yearly meeting, Iowa (Conservative), has no objections either to an uncompromising commitment to shared Christian faith, or to a clear affirmation of gay, lesbian and transgender brothers and sisters. And surely we are not the only ones in the Quaker world who are like that! — are we? I know you did not ask us for recognition or affiliation, but I wonder who you did ask.Marshall Massey (Iowa YM [C])http://journal.earthwitness.org/noreply@blogger.com
